R. Stevie Moore is an underground legend. An incredibly prolific and creative songwriter and musician, Moore has self-released over 400 albums since his classic debut, Phonography, in 1976. Stylistically, Moore is all over the map. He likens his approach to “free-form radio” and is equally adept at McCartneyesque pop, Rundgren rock, Roger Miller country, and everything in between. Moore has been a huge influence on low-fi musicians such as Ariel Pink, yet remains something of a mysterious character, the “curator of his own museum,” according to his website, and holed up in Bloomfield, New Jersey. BOMBsessions visited him there, where he performed a couple of songs from his vast back catalog and sat down to discuss his past and future endeavors.

Phonography, just reissued by Sundazed Records, is available here. Check out the R. Stevie Moore tribute boxset (and download a copy), then top it off and go see him play with Ariel Pink’s Haunted Graffiti at Irving Plaza in NYC on July 24th, and/or at Bruar Falls in Brooklyn on August 5th.
