John Wesley Harding performs this Saturday at the festival “Words and Music: A Literary Feast in New Orleans.” Cannes winner Michael Haneke’s film ”Das Weisse Band” (The White Ribbon) opens the Festival of European film “Cinedays” and will be opening in NYC next month. Last night at Canon Theatre, David Cronenberg interviewed Stephen King about his possible upcoming sequel to The Shining (so perhaps an upcoming film adaptation [perhaps by Cronenberg?!?—ed]) Patti Smith plays this Saturday along with Sonic Youth and the Yeah Yeah Yeahs at Chicago Filmmakers. In the new issue of Paris, LA, Hilton Als talks about self-portraiture. Joel Shapiro has nine new prints with Gemini G.E.L. at Joni Moisant Weyl. John Zinsser’s Art Dealer Archipelagos, a collection of drawings by the painter, opens today at James Graham. Film The Blind Side with Kathy Bates comes to theaters today. And tonight, Jayne Anne Phillips reads from her latest novel at NYU’s Lillian Vernon Creative Writers House.

David Kapp’s New Paintings will be at the Alpha Gallery until November 4th. Steven Holl Architects’ recently completed Linked Hybrid complex just won the 2009 “Council on Tall Buildings and Urban Habitat (CTBUH) Best Tall Building Overall Award.” Carroll Dunham will be at the Barbara Gladstone Gallery until 11/5 and Eric Fischl opened at Mary Boone on 10/31. Richard Foreman’s Idiot Savant, with Willem Dafoe (also starring in von Trier’s Antichrist, but you knew that already), is playing at the Public Theater and Kenneth Lonergan’s The Starry Messenger is now playing at The New Group.  Felix Gonzalez-Torres and Roni Horn have a joint exhibit, Paired, Gold, at the Guggenheim Museum through 1/6. Matthew Ritchie will be at the Andrea Rosen Gallery through 12/5. Steve Earle is now touring (with y’alternative hunk Rhett Miller <3)  to support his newest album Townes. Mitch Epstein will be speaking with Michael Fried, author of Why Photography Matters as Art as Never Before, at the New York Studio School on tonight (11/4) at 6:30pm.  Karole Armitage and Lukas Ligeti’s Itutu opens tonight at BAM. Also, right around the corner from BOMB HQ, Jonathan Lethem will be reading at Greenlight Bookstore this Thursday!

This fall’s official soundtrack to nostalgia is out now: New “supergroup” Them Crooked Vultures, which includes former Led Zeppelin bassist John Paul Jones, just unleashed “New Fang,” their first single off their self-titled debut album, on to the internet. For nostalgia of a different sort: Ian McKellen (that’s “Sir Ian” to you) just got an award for his distinguished career as an interpreter of Shakespeare. Jane Campion’s Bright Star just scored four nominations for the 2009 British Independent Film Awards, one of which is sponsored by a cosmetics company (bonus!). Junot Díaz is headlining a London festival of Ibero-American literature. OsGemeos have anexhibition at a museum in Norway that is 100% bizarre-which is to say, totally normal for OsGemeos. Lucrecia Martel is on the Tiger Awards committee at theRotterdam International Film Festival. Susan Rothenberg has a show at the O’Keeffe Museum opening in January. And vertiginous to the last, Richard Serra has two new walk-through sculptures at Gagosian (the exhibition opens on the 27th).

On the BOMB Alerts docket today: EI-P is getting remixed with Bon Iver. Errol Morris wonders if a famous photo might have been a fake. NYT art critic Michael Kimmelman says of Kiki Smith,“she’s also the perfect illustration of how an artist, as opposed to an art historian, talks about art because she freely says what comes to her mind without worrying about whether it’s historically germane.” Perhaps he’s referring to a certain interview from 1994. Father of My Children, a critical darling at the London Film Festival, is based on(SPOILERS) real events in the life of Belá Tarr. Cosmetic designer François Nars is celebrating his company’s fifteenth anniversary with a giant coffee table book featuring Isabella Rossellini and Marc Jacobs in some seriously intense makeup. Raymond Pettibon is part of an all-star lineup at the Deitch Projects. And on a sad note, Nancy Spero passed away this past Saturday at NYU Hospital.

Join Polly Apfelbaum, Frank Stella and Petah Coyne this Saturday for a unique-and bizarre series of parties in Kansas City collectors’ homes for the Kemper Museum’s 15th Anniversary. The Vitra Design Museum in Germany is currently hosting an exhibition of work by the Campana Brothers. Continuing the Teutonic theme, Atom Egoyan is to be honored “Master of Cinema” at the Mannheim film festival. Alma Guillermoprieto will speak on ‘How to Be Mexican’ (Oct.12) at the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater. Madison Smart Bell is set to release his new novel Devil’s Dream on Nov. 2. The Boston Book Festival takes place on Oct. 24 and features Robert Pinsky amongst others. Wallace Shawn is in conversation at UCLA (Oct.14).

Artwork by Jasper Johns and Susan Rothenberg has been selected by Michelle Obama to hang in the White House (via Washington Post). Olafur Eliasson has collaborated with Mekanism to create a skate deck.  Rosanne Cash’s new album The List has just been released. The Gagosian Gallery will hold the most comprehensive look at Roni Horn’s work to date from Nov. 6 to Jan. 24. Francine Prose examines the literary genius of Anne Frank in her new book (review via NY Times). Michael Ondaatje is adapting his latest novel Divasadero for the stage, it will run Nov. 6 to Nov. 8 at Toronto’s Theatre Passe Muraille. The Wexner Center for the Arts in Columbus is holding the first US retrospective of the Belgian artist Luc Tuymans. Julia Wolfe will play le poisson rouge (Oct. 21) as part of CMJ.

Allen Ruppersberg invites you (Oct. 8) to bring in a snapshot and receive a vinyl record, which “functions as an oral analog” to his show at the Santa Monica Museum of Modern Art. The Possible Life of Christian Boltanski (a book-length interview with the artist) has just been released; BOMB interviewed him in 1989. His partner Annette Messager is currently showing at the Marian Goodman in Paris.  William Forsythe is in conversation at the NYPL (Oct. 9). While Susan Rothenberg is in conversation Oct. 13. Her new exhibition opens at the Modern Museum of Fort Worth, Oct. 18. Steven Holl’s new Museum Denmark has just been completed. The Polanski debate continues; Allison Anders gets angry (via HuffPo), while Rushdie, Auster, Wong Kar-wai and Almodóvar have all signed the petition to free him. Continuing the theme, Richard Prince is in trouble for his photo of Brooke Shields at the Tate Modern.

Wilborn Hampton has recently published a new biography of Horton Foote. On October 7th Salman Rushdie will receive the 2009 Saint Louis Literary Award. Mira Nair’s new film, Amelia, will open the Doha Tribeca Film Festival. Crawley Black History Month starts this weekend-on October 7th the experiences of Miriam Makeba will be screened in Soul Power. In New Zealand Yayoi Kusama opens at the Wellington City Art Gallery. More locally, the Dan Graham exhibition will be at the Whitney until October 11th. On October 5th the Gagosian Gallery will present Ed Ruscha with the Artistic Excellence Award. Also, several filmmakers, including Pedro Almodovar, have demanded the release of recent arrestee Roman Polanski. BOMB interviewees have a surprisingly large presence in J.Crew’s October catalogue, featuring Vito Acconci and Billy Sullivan. The Poetry Foundation has animated videos to poems read by the certified genius Heather McHugh, and the uncertified Paul Muldoon and Cornelius Eady.

Brooklyn is musical this evening: Anthony Coleman performs at IBEAM in Gowanus, and Totopos plays a rare Julius Hemphill suite in Williamsburg. Saturday is cinematic, as BAM shows Juliette Binoche’s Michael Haneke films. Maya Lin’s new Museum of Chinese in America opened this week. Kevin Spacey now stars in the Old Vic’s Inherit the Wind in London. Joyce Carol Oates and Haruki Murakami are both 9/1 to win the Nobel. Alternatively take Michael Ondaatje at 50/1, Peter Carey at 66/1, Salman Rushdie at 80/1, or Paul Auster at 100/1. Lily Allen is quitting music to star in Neil LaBute’s Reasons to be Pretty.

Boredoms play two shows today; during the day with EL-P and many more at ATP New York, and in the evening at EMPAC with Deerhunter. On Saturday Michael Roth introduces the Kazan Centennial film series at Wesleyan University’s Center for Film Studies.  Then on Sunday Kimiko Hahn reads from her work at Bowery Poetry Club. The schedule for the BFI London Film Festival (Oct. 14- Oct. 29) was just announced and Sam Taylor-Wood’s directorial debut about John Lennon, Nowhere Boy, is set to close the festival. Video artist Shirin Neshat also debuts with her controversial Women Without Men, and Atom Egoyan will show his latest. This years PRELUDE.09 (Sept. 30-Oct. 3) line-up has also been released and features Marina Abramovic and John Jesurun. In South Carolina, the Greenville Museum of Art’s current exhibition is Jasper Johns: Just Thinking of a Series of Dreams. Fay Weldon may be controversial, but she is never boring, from BOMB in 1990 to elsewhere in 2009.

The Brooklyn Book Festival is happening this Sunday, Sept. 13 and features an amazing line-up. BOMB will be there with our own event, as will be many past BOMB interviewees: Paul Auster, Jonathan Lethem and Mary Gaitskill (also interviewed 1990) in conversation, Colson Whitehead, A.M. Homes, Richard Price, Francine Prose, Cornelius Eady and Paul Muldoon.There will also be a panel discussion on the late, great Mahmoud Darwish. For those who cannot make it, there is Colm Tóibín’s excellent new novel Brooklyn. Across the Atlantic in London, Richard Nelson has adapted Nabakov’s Lolita into a 90-minute monologue at the National Theatre. A flurry of gallery openings the next few days: Kara Walker at Sikkema Jenkins, Allen Frame at Gitterman Gallery, Maya Lin and Sol LeWitt at PaceWildenstein, Jessica Stockholder at the Klaus von Nichtssagend Gallery and Mike Kelley and Michael Smith at  Sculpturecenter.

Jane Campion spoke with BOMB about doomed love in 1990, and her critically acclaimed new film ‘Bright Star‘ (Sept. 18) continues the theme. The New Yorker Festival’s “Shouts & Murmurs Live” (Oct. 16-18) will feature Noah Baumbach and a performance by Steve Earle amongst many others.  Visitors to Whitney’s Biennial in Greenpoint, featuring Kara Walker, found this instead of her artwork. The latest Bookforum reviews the new novels from Jonathan Lethem, Richard Powers and Padgett Powell. Vito Acconci introduces a screening of Resnais’ ‘Last Year at Marienbad‘ at the Rubin Museum of Art (Sept. 25). Current and forthcoming exhibitions featuring BOMB interviewees include a major Anish Kapoor show (Sept. 26) at the Royal Academy in London (watch a video of Kapoor’s ‘Shooting Into the Corner’, featured in the exhibition), and you can catch Vera Lutter in New York (until Sept. 12), or Cindy Sherman (until Sept. 19) in LA at the Gagosian Gallery.

Roberto Bolaño’s ‘The Skating Rink‘ is just out, and reviewed at Quaterly Conversation. BOMB interviewed Nick Cave just after his first novel, and now his latest will be available on iPhone. Speaking of art and phones, Yayoi Kusama has designed a cell phone that’s available for purchase. Gus Van Sant rarely gives interviews, but he talked to Gary Indiana for BOMB in 1993, and now Movmnt in 2009.  Past interviewees’ current exhibitions include Isabel Toledo at FIT in New York, Chuck Close at Akron Art Museum in Ohio, and Eric Fischl, Los Carpinteros, Gabriel Ozorco and Sergio Vega are all featured in a new exhibition called Art, Media and Material Witness at the Harn Museum in Florida . David Del Tredici plays at Bargemusic in New York on September 2nd, 4th, 5th, 6th.
